On Wednesday, May 4th, fans across the world celebrated Star Wars Day. Most commemorated the unofficial holiday by binge watching all seven films or greeting passersby with “May the fourth be with you” — A nod to the movie’s famous line, “May the force be with you.”
However, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama took the celebrations of the revered film series to a new level with a dance party that included some stormtroopers and R2D2. The video which was shared on the official White House website on May 4th shows the couple rocking to Mrs. Obama’s favorite song — “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars!
May 4th was chosen as Star Wars Day because of the easy pun on the movie’s catchphrase, “May the force be with you.” Interestingly enough, the phrase was not created by the maker of the movies, Lucasfilms, but by a British newspaper to congratulate former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on her election on May 4th, 1979. In fact, it was not until 2011 that it was adopted by some Star Wars fans in Toronto, Canada. Thanks to the internet and social media, observance of the holiday has now spread worldwide. In 2015, even astronauts at the ISS celebrated the event with a special Star Wars movie screening.
