It's a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath…

Imagine a world without poverty, war or pain. A world where everything is comfortable and familiar - a world where everything is the same. No colour, no music. In such a world, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory and is apprenticed to the Giver, an old man who stores memories from the Community’s past. As Jonas learns about violence and sadness, as well as beauty and joy, he discover the sinister truth behind his safe existence.

Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is a thought-provoking look at utopian society. It was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1994.

It is a great book to encourage us to cherish what we have in our world right now, which is colorful and full of music, happiness, sadness, and variety of feelings. We can enjoy and appreciate all the achievement we make with our own, but not the arrangement from others to control our life, and make it dull and boring. I think the author would like to express his regrets about how our world is still full of limitations, which limit humans from doing more than they can, for example, we still can't see any colors beyond infrared and ultraviolet. The author wanted to remind us that the limitation causes our blindness of another perception of the universe which is like the limitation that happen in the community described in the book. Maybe one day, what the author hope, will be someone that can go beyond the boundaries to show human another outside our own world that give humans the limitless or infinity of knowledge and feelings about life.

Awesome book, awesome concept.

This is a class book that I'm reading now in my school. This book is about jonas becoming a reciver.he has almost all the steps but there is one more wisdom.it is a really great book after all but it has some challenging words.

The giver: “The giver” is a story about a controlled society, where there is no feeling, no pain, no suffering, no music and color,no love and no choices, but only sameness. “The Elders” decide who you marry to, whom you adopt as children, and a job will be assigned to you. Jonas has been selected to become “The Receiver of Memory”, and he is the only one who knows what the real world is like, beside his teacher. But Jonas will feel how the people in the real world feel. The reason Jonas has been picked to be the giver is because he has intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom, and most of all, "The Capacity to See Beyond." During training, Jonas started to know the truth, which they were controlled unfairly, and realized the community has murdered sick infants, old people, and those who broke the rules. Therefore, together with the giver, his teacher, they decided to break the rules and change the future of everyone I think “the giver is a creative and interesting story because it showed that how freedom is important to us. If you can’t make decision for yourself, or love whoever you want, what is the purpose of living? I could hardly forget when Jonas learned about love, he asked his parents “Do you love me?” For me, I rather have to face the pain than lose feelings, because that’s how life is interesting!

This story "The Giver"is about Jona was born in a world which is a nice and organised society, but he can't see any colors. Just when he going to get job when he at the age, he was selected to be The Giver which is a job that he can know the secret of the whole society. When he start learning the history and every other things he wanted to know . He knew that there are more to go on and have to explore by himself so then he trying to bring his friends with him but they declined his offer. So he decided to bring his little baby brother with and get out of the area . Just when he leave all people get there memories back and they can start seeing colors . Just when Jona he a wooden house and he got a new life and family to go on.

The giver is a wonderful book. I loved The Giver because the plot was very creative, the theme was magnificent, and the setting was vivid. The theme of this book is clearly represented: freedom, the right to make your own choices. There are designated spots for everything. The setting helped develop the plot and theme. The story is about Jonas lives in a perfect society where is no suffering, poverty, war, and delinquency. Everything is in order and in control. The people have no worries and cares because the community which everyone and everything are equal and same. The book convey to me as a reminder me about that there is no better world than the one we live in. The giver I really believe that every should read.

This is a really good book. It makes you realise how appreciative you should be of what you have. It has a lot of meaning.

This story conveys an extra ordinary society with only simple minded, simple life,as the main character jonas try to figure out something missing in this society, I should say he is a great person, and devoted his life to the society,I would do the same thing if I were Jonas because we need to give people choices to choose what they like, and what they want, and this book depicted some real situation in our world that some power try to cover up or reemit our humans ability to perceive beyond all the limitaion they have.

i loved it

I love Lily in the first book. I don't really know why but I think she is so cute and I wonder what happens to her when Jonas goes to live in Village.
