It's a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath…

Imagine a world without poverty, war or pain. A world where everything is comfortable and familiar - a world where everything is the same. No colour, no music. In such a world, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory and is apprenticed to the Giver, an old man who stores memories from the Community’s past. As Jonas learns about violence and sadness, as well as beauty and joy, he discover the sinister truth behind his safe existence.

Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is a thought-provoking look at utopian society. It was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1994.

This book starts out Utopian (which means a perfect world, or a perfect community, usually set in the future. Example: The Hunger Games), and when the main character, Jonas, is assigned his job, he discovers things about how the world used to be, he becomes rebellious.

Ahhhhhhhh!!! The movie is coming out TOMORROW!!!!! I'm so happy!!!!! I just reread the book right now so I could compare for the movie tomorrow!!!! Is it just me... that I'm the only one who's excited to watch it, or it anyone else excited to watch it?????

This book was kind of creepy in the beginning but then improved a lot. You will like this book if you like pretty creepy book. Lois Lowry wrote this book so that people could see what a world without war and difference could be like.

This book has always sparked my interest and I finally got the opportunity to read it.The author is as all the good authors are,and that is depth. Not to much distinction,as the character,Jonah lacks it at the beginning, but it slowly rises until it explains with extreme detail,as Jonah is amazed with the world around him.Leaves you at an edge, even at the end.If you read it,you would wish for a sequel

DYSTOPIA/UTOPIA BOOK! You can never go wrong with that. This takes place in the future, but not high tech like you would expect. It IS high tech, but you wouldn't know until you understand.

Also, the apple plays an important role in this, and unlike other people, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

The ending is mysterious, and you don't know what happens to him until you read Gathering Blue (book 2) and Messenger (book 3).

this book was amazing so i won't spoil anything before anyone reads it but disclaimer the ending is not clear its up to your imagination on how this story ends

This is a really good book! It is a little sad, but it is very exciting and I really liked it. My friend recommended this book to me, because she had read it before me. Now, I recommend it, so go to the nearest library, and try to find this book!

I read it in class SO good I loved it very nice

I read this book and it is very stunning. It is about this young boy named Jonas. He is in an utopia (a perfect world). He cannot see color, or bad. He goes to a ceremony, called the ceremony of twelve. That is where he gets his job chosen for him, starting from the age of 12, and has to live with it for the rest of his life. No one ever questions the society. Jonas was chosen as the Receiver, the Receiver receives memories from the past. He can see bad, and he can see color as well. It is a very exciting read!!
