It's a perfect world, where everything looks right. But ugly truths lie beneath…

Imagine a world without poverty, war or pain. A world where everything is comfortable and familiar - a world where everything is the same. No colour, no music. In such a world, Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory and is apprenticed to the Giver, an old man who stores memories from the Community’s past. As Jonas learns about violence and sadness, as well as beauty and joy, he discover the sinister truth behind his safe existence.

Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is a thought-provoking look at utopian society. It was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1994.

This is the best book i have ever read. It is a book about discovering new things and embracing them the best you can. Jonas is about to turn twelve, the age where all children are given a role and job in their colorless, well-oiled machine of a community. Before his ceremony of Twelve, he sees flashes of what seems to be color. At his Ceremony, he is selected to be the next Receiver of Memories under the Giver. The Giver, an old man, shows Jonas memories of beauty, color, and love- but also war, and pain. This book is truly deserving of the Newbery Medal it won in 1994.

The Giver is a great book, centered around a boy named Jonas in a dystopian society where everything is without color, music, or memories. If you're looking for something to read, definitely try out this book, as well as the other companion books.

This book was pretty good. I liked it a lot becuase it was very intersting. The plot is really good and it has lots of twists and turns. I would recommend it.

this book made me cry. in this book there is no color, no emotions, Life is do you job and come home Jonas the main character was given the chance to be the next generation Giver which means first being the receiver. this enables him to experience things like color and music. he also learns to feel all sorts of emotions like pain, suffering, loss, joy, and love. <3 once Jonas learns how messed up his world is he finds himself rearing to leave with a babyhe bonded with. what will happen next????

This was an exotic novel about individuality set far in the future. It's in world with no color or memories of the Earth's history. A boy named Jonas is chosen to be the 'Receiver' who works under the 'Giver'. Jonas is meant to slowly receive memories and understanding of feeling from the Giver. The writing was slow to start and builds up excitingly. The world Louis Lowry creates is interesting and enjoyable. A great read-if you are into this type of story.

The Giver shows how different the world would be if everything was the same. Everything in Jonas's life is as simple as black and white. There is no gray areas. Then, one day, Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver and his world is forever changed. The job of Receiver allows Jonas to see color for the first time, to experience feelings for the first time, and to see the good and bad of everything life has to offer.

The Giver is about a boy named Jonas. He is about to turn 12, that is when he gets a job, role, etc. He has been doing "community service" since then. Everything is black and white. This is a plain neighborhood and everything is the same and there are very different rules then to our "world" rules. Before the ceremony, Jonas sees the color of his friends hair, but he can't describe the color. At the ceremony, he is chosen as the receiver, the most rare job, which is only chosen by someone worthy and great and etc. The old receiver then becomes the giver. Please read this book, it's the greatest book of all time! Stop reading this review and go read, read, read this book!

A wise, thought provoking book that captures the readers' attention with the philosophy of an unknown world, and the perspective of a young boy experiencing and living it. An all around good read for those who wish to give a book some thought, and understanding.
